Young soccer star steps on to futsal national stage

Lucy Hope is usually seen achieving out on the soccer pitch, but she recently took her outdoor skills inside so successfully she ended up competing at this year’s National Futsal Championships.

The South West Academy of Sport athlete was part of an under-17 Gold Fields WA Futsal team that Football West took to Melbourne to contest the tournament.

At the event earlier this month, representative teams from Australian states and territories plus international sides including from New Zealand and the Solomon Islands battled it out under one roof.

Sixteen-year-old Hope was among those who donned the black and gold for WA, after being encouraged by friends to take up the game during soccer’s off-season.

“I got invited from what they saw me do on the outdoor field.  Many of the skills are transferable, but quicker within the far more confined space,” Hope said.

While the WA side didn’t win, Hope said it was great having the opportunity to travel with the team, describing it as a “super cool” experience, playing against fiercely competitive and talented opponents.

The Bunbury Senior High School student is now in preseason for the upcoming WA Women’s National Premier League season in Perth, where she plays for Murdoch University Melville.
