WAIS Staff Put Athletes to the Test

Dec 27, 2023 | News

Nineteen south west athletes were in for a treat last month when they were put to through their paces by high performance staff for the Western Australia Institute of Sport (WAIS).

The testing was aimed to evaluate the physical and physiological attributes of young individuals to identify their potential for success in rowing.

The evaluation focused on the physical characteristics of the athletes, including height, weight, body composition, flexibility, balance, and coordination.

This assessment was crucial to identify individuals with the ideal physique and physical attributes required for rowing.

Additionally, the athletes underwent physiological testing to assess their aerobic and anaerobic capacity and measures such as VO2 max and anaerobic threshold tests provided valuable insights into their cardiovascular fitness and ability to generate power over short durations.

The talent identification testing conducted by WAIS in collaboration with SWAS and Rowing WA and this is just the beginning of a TID process, and some athlete will receive ongoing monitoring and assessment of their progress and potential to ensure their continuous development and provide them with the necessary support and guidance.

SWAS and Rowing WA are committed to nurturing young talent and providing opportunities for athletes to excel in rowing and by identifying potential at an early stage, we aim to support these athletes in fulfilling their dreams and achieving success in the sport.
