Thomas once again proves he has the gift for outrunning the competition

Superfast runner Thomas Cross has clocked up another memorable win, this time earning gold at one of Western Australia’s most iconic races – the Leonora Golden Gift.

The South West Academy of Sport scholarship holder was the first across the finish line in the men’s open mile final, held on the bitumen track of the outback town’s main street.

The Brunswick Junction teenager described competing in the Gift earlier this month as an “amazing experience”.

“It was one of the best weekends running I’ve ever had,” Cross said.

“It was really fun. It was good but it was quite strange because the Gift was on a road. You had to run up the road and run back – like three times.”

The young gun said the event being so different was what made it so much fun, especially since he was able to enjoy his time in Leonora with teammates.

Cross has earned a reputation for breaking track records. As well as notching up a number of individual records, he was part of the West Track Under 16 Men’s 4x400m relay team that smashed a State relay record at the 2021 State Relay Championships powered by Go For 2&5 in December.
