Gearing up for championships in Adelaide

The West Australian netball teams contesting this year’s 17/U and 19/U national championships in Adelaide have been boosted with a healthy shot of South West talent.

A long list of South West Academy of Sport athletes made the final cut for the state sides, beating hopefuls from around the state who trialled for the squads during rigorous selection processes.

SWAS netball players Riley Culnane, Giselle Taylor, Brooke Gibson and Ella Taylor were offered positions in the state 17/U side. Brooke Repacholi and Elycce Webb were offered training partner positions.

Meanwhile, Jessica Repacholi and Harmony Sutherland will play for WA in the 19/U tournament.

SWAS netball head coach Dale Nielsen said the players were committed to achieving the highest level in their sport and have had opportunities to excel by being part of the region’s netball pathways.

As part of their preparations for the national championships being held from April 17 to 22 in Adelaide, the local players will attend two training sessions a week in Perth and one in the South West.

This will be in addition to the strength and conditioning gym sessions they will undertake in the region.

“The South West athletes will find the national championships to be several steps above the WANL competition, and they will be playing against the best young talent from every state and territory in Australia,” Nielsen said.

“Many of these young athletes will go on to play for Australia in the future.”
