Courtney Butlion in the USA
Soccer talent and former Bunbury resident Courtney Butlion has described taking up a US student-athlete scholarship with Eastern Florida State College as one of the best decisions she has ever made.
“I have grown so much as a person, learnt things about myself that I never knew,” Butlion said.
“I have made some unreal lifelong friends and I’m embracing the diversity.
“Playing college soccer so far has been beneficial to myself as a player, I have improved heaps and it’s awesome getting to train five times a week with my team.
“Sometimes it can be hard to balance the school work and training but you just have to accept it won’t be easy, as time management becomes essential.”
Butlion, who has now been in the USA for seven months, is studying towards an Associate Degree with plans to complete a Bachelor’s Degree in teaching, while also playing soccer for the Eastern Florida Titans.
The chance to study abroad while pursuing a soccer career came about after Butlion caught the eyes of recruiters who were impressed by the skills displayed in a highlights reel posted on YouTube after being assisted by Elite Athletes Scouting Agency.
Taking up the opportunity has opened up doors for the exciting young sportswoman.
“I have a lot of highlights about being in the USA so far,” Butlion said.
“My favourite one is probably how lucky I am to be here.
“I get to train almost every day doing what I love the most, living with my friends who have become like my family and get to work toward my education goal all at the same time.”
Courtney’s tips for balancing soccer and college:
“I balance soccer and college through my time management skills. At the beginning of each week, I write down a ‘to do’ list of all my assignments, readings or quizzes that are due that week in order of their importance. I also try to use my time before practices to complete this work.”
