Off to Gold Coast for 16 and Under School Sport Australia Hockey Championships

Local hockey talent will be displayed on the national stage when five South West Academy of Sport athletes compete in the upcoming 16 and Under School Sport Australia Hockey Championships.

Belle Ramshaw, Charli Wicksteed, Emma Barrett, Grace Sheppard and Indee Elphick will all don the black and gold colours of WA to represent the state at the tournament taking place on the Gold Coast from August 4 to 11.

The SWAS athletes will be among more than 220 of Australia’s best junior hockey players who will be aiming to push their sides up the ladder as the Australian states and the ACT campaign for national title honours.

Competitors will also have the chance of catching the eyes of selectors looking to fill positions in the School Sport Australia All Australian Hockey teams that will travel to Europe over May and June next year.

SWAS chief executive officer Bernice Butlion said it was a great achievement to have five SWAS athletes selected for the under-16s WA School Sport Australia teams, especially given how competitive hockey is at a school-aged level.

“The specialist coaching services that these athletes obtain in their ‘daily environment’ is making a difference and the coaches are excited about some of the prospects of these athletes in the near future,” she said.

“The level of competition at the championships will be high as there will be other states and territories participating and the outcome should be interesting for WA.

“However, I am convinced that WA will perform well and utilise their sporting ability well against other teams.”
