James and Kate achieve selection to the WA side
Two South West Academy of Sport athletes have been named in the Western Suns state team in recognition of their impressive achievements this surf sports season.
Bunbury teenagers James Kiely and Kate Lockley achieved selection to the WA side as under-17 athletes, after shining on the surf and sand.
Their selection was based on performances throughout the 2020/21 season and overall consistency.
Although there are no national events for the team to compete in because of the COVID-19 pandemic, their inclusion honours their outstanding accomplishments.
Kiely, who excels in beach sprints, said it was really exciting to have been chosen for the team.
“I was really stoked to find that I had made it into the team,” Kiely said.
Lockley, who was a standout athlete at the 2021 SunSmart WA Country Championships with 12 wins across individual and team events, said earning a position in the Western Suns motivated her to persist with training.
“It’s a good opportunity for us to be role models for the club, it’s a good way of encouraging the younger kids,” Lockley said.
