It takes more than winning to be a champion, and South West Academy of Sport hockey players are proving that they have the qualities and attitude of world-class athletes.
A number of SWAS hockey athletes have been giving back to the community by assisting Kookaburras Tom Wickham and Matt Dawson to run development clinics organised by Bunbury Hockey Association for primary school-aged hockey players.
SWAS hockey head coach Andrew Blee said it was a great chance for the SWAS athletes not only to act as role models, but to learn from some of the best in the game.
“Any opportunity for our young athletes to mix with current Australian players will give them a new rigour to strive to be their best,” he said.
“Being involved as assistant coaches this year will allow them to give back to hockey, which has supported them so much in their development.
“This is a very important part of their journey as athletes and ambassadors of hockey. Hopefully, they can take two or three key messages away that will assist them with their own games as well.”
