Meg Thompson to captain at Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships

Doors are opening for South West Academy of Sport cricket player Meg Thompson who is about to make the leap from junior to open state representative cricket.

The 18-year-old emerging star has been given a golden opportunity to captain the female West Australian side that will contest the upcoming Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships.

It’s a big step up for the Busselton teenager, who will be one of the youngest in the side when she takes on the leadership role in Wollongong next month.

“Having success as a team is something I look forward to,” she said.

The tournament showcases the best cricket talent from regional Australia, and Thompson said she was honoured to represent not only her state but also her town.

“It”s such a massive step, achievement for everyone involved,” Thompson said.

It’s been a memorable year for the top wicketkeeper, who in April was named the state’s under-18 female player of the year for 2015-16 at the prestigious Karen Read Medal awards night.

Other highlights include playing at the under-18 national cricket championships in Canberra.

The Commonwealth Bank Australian Country Cricket Championships will run from Tuesday January 3 to Wednesday January 11.
