Kyle Lee enters the history books
South West Academy of Sport alumni athlete Kyle Lee set a new record at this year’s SunSmart Busselton Jetty Swim, completing the annual race around the landmark in a phenomenal time of 39:24.2.
He is one of only three swimmers in the 26-year history of the iconic event to have blitzed the 3.6km course in less than 40 minutes, joining an elite club which boasts top open water swimmer Rhys Mainstone and Dutch international Lars Bottelier.
Lee led an incredible charge of current and former SWAS swimmers who put on a dominant display at the annual event which this year attracted more than 2500 into the water on Sunday February 14 2021.
Current scholarship holder Kaiden Richings wasn’t far behind record-breaker Lee, finishing in second place with a time of 40:27.5.
SWAS talents Owen Cattaway claimed fourth overall and Lucinda Jones triumphed in her age group.
SWAS chief executive officer Bernice Butlion praised the current and former SWAS swimmers on their achievements.
“Congratulations to our SWAS swimmers at the recent SunSmart Busselton Jetty Swim,” Butlion said.
“Their open water swimming results were outstanding.
“Special mention should be made of Kyle Lee, winning in a time of 39 minutes and 24 seconds, the fastest time since the inception of the race.”
