Triumphs in her age category
Lucinda Jones was one of the awe-inspiring South West Academy of Sport athletes who shone at this year’s SunSmart Busselton Jetty Swim – and her love of surfing may have had something to do with her earning a top finish.
The 17-year-old Margaret River student was the first to reach the shoreline in the 15 to 19 female category.
“I’m a surfer so I understand the ocean, so swimming in the open water is not difficult when it’s calm,” Jones said.
“It’s just getting in a rhythm and making sure you pace yourself and not go full blast at the beginning.”
Jones said it was fantastic crossing the sand at the end of the race, knowing she had secured a win.
“It’s a pretty good feeling that you’ve made it and you’re part of such an incredible event,” Jones said.
It is not only the open water where Jones is making a splash, with the teenager also stamping her authority in the pool.
At the Hancock Prospecting Western Australia Swimming Championships in December, Jones earned a gold, along with a silver and two bronze.
