On the way to the Junior Road National Championships
When you’re racing to earn points for state team selection, the best way to finish a race is on top of the podium.
And that is exactly what promising junior cyclist Courtland Wood did when he competed in a National Junior Road Series event at Chidlow earlier this month.
The South West Academy of Sport athlete was the first to cross the finish line in the under-17 category of the Chidlow III race – part of The Elements Road Series – on August 5.
The 16-year-old Busselton speedster, who attends MacKillop Catholic College and comes from a triathlon background, met the challenge of rolling climbs served up by the course while competing against the state’s best to place himself in an enviable position.
“Because I won that it gives me a better chance of getting into the state team,” Wood said.
Part of the Cycling Australia’s inaugural National Junior Road Series, the event acted as a points earner for state team selection on the way to the Junior Road National Championships taking place in Bunbury from September 21 to 23.
