Connor and Jackson on the AFL pathway

South West Academy of Sport athletes Connor Carbone and Jackson Broadbent have each taken a giant stride forward in their football careers, with selection to the 2021 State 17s Academy.

The promising footballers are competing for the WA team in the NAB AFL U17 Championships, which kicked off on Sunday June 20 with a carnival opening game against South Australia in Adelaide.

Carbone, who lives in Brunswick Junction, said it was a very exciting to get called up to play in the squad, hailing it a confidence booster after working hard on the footy field.

“I feel like I really needed it, really get my confidence up a bit more,” Carbone said.

Broadbent, who resides in Collie, said it meant a lot to him to be on the journey through football’s ranks.

“Playing for WA, just getting to represent your State, is something unbelievable. Not many people get to do it – I’m pretty proud of it,” Broadbent said.

Both up-and-coming footballers benefit from having the support of being in an elite football environment as they set their sights on progressing through football ranks.

SWAS football head coach Jamie Douse congratulated Carbone and Broadbent on their selection to the 2021 State 17s Academy.

“Both young men have worked hard to earn their selection, which is a major achievement,” Douse said.

“In addition to regular travel to Mandurah and Perth, they have been diligent with their work in the gym and general preparation and recovery.”
