Brings back bronze from England

Leschenault teenager Shannon Dalton is proof you can juggle school with other pursuits, having triumphed at an international sailing regatta during the most recent school holidays.

The 17-year-old returned home from the RYA Youth National Championships with a bronze medal after she and crew member Raffael Torre excelled in the under-19 Nacra 15 class.

“That was the first regatta we’d done together and we came away with third, which we’re pretty happy with,” Dalton said.

Competing on waters off the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy, the team navigated windy conditions on most days to earn a top three finish.

“It was really different because we had to sail maybe 45 minutes to get out to the course we were sailing,” Dalton said.

“It was good to do something different and test your skills somewhere new.”

For now, the South West Academy of Sport athlete and Manea Senior College Year 12 student is concentrating on studying and training, with the view to competing at the next national championships.

“I just try to balance as much as I can,” Dalton said.

“I try during the week to work really hard on school so I can leave the weekends for sailing.”
