Young athletes in the South West region who aspire to take their game to the next level are encouraged to apply for a scholarship with the South West Academy of Sport.
Applications are now open for the academy’s popular Individual Athlete Support Program, which is geared at nurturing the development of promising junior sports men and women.
Offering high-level support, the program caters for 15 to 18-year-olds whose sport is not covered by the SWAS partner programs of Australian Rules football, netball and hockey.
SWAS chief executive officer Bernice Butlion said the program was tailor-made to meet the needs of individual participants striving to transition to higher representative levels.
“This program provides so much value for athletes,” Butlion said.
“We identify where we can assist participants – and then prepare them for success on the athlete pathway for their sport.
“If you want to take your sporting career further, we invite you to apply for a position in this program.
“Past participants have gone on to compete on some of the world’s highest stages including the Olympic Games.”
Taking a holistic approach, athletes participating in the program are assisted in their daily training environment with the view to developing them as champions on and off the field.
Examples of the type of support available include meeting training costs, specialised coaching, strength and conditioning services, nutrition assessment, athlete career and education, and access to a sport psychologist and physiotherapist.
SWAS has been assisting regional athletes in the South West since 2008, when it was established to even the playing field between regional athletes in the South West and their peers in the Perth metropolitan area.
By providing training, coaching and support services close to home, SWAS helps to reduce pressures on athletes and their families.
