What are the objectives of the program?
  • Maximise South West representation in State underage teams (U/15, U/16 & U/18)
  • Maximise the South West contribution to Western Australian performances at National Championships
  • Act as a feeding program into South West Strikers representative side
  • Act as a feeding and support program into WAIS program objectives
The SWAS Hockey Program caters for the development and support of SWAS athletes currently or identified as capable of progressing to the highest representative levels of their sport. The program provides coaching, training, facilities and support services to improve athlete competitive performance.
What training does the program involve?
Pre season

  • Two nights a week training (split between Bunbury and Busselton where possible). Sessions involve one hour fitness work and one hour skills work.

Season

  • One night a fortnight SWAS skills training. This involves 1 hour fitness & 1 hour skills.
  • Half nights a week club training.
  • One night a week training with South West Strikers representative side (Boys only).
  • Specialist coaching from WAIS coaches 2/3 times per year.
  • Athletes are exposed to video analysis to help with their development.
  • Pilates
  • Athletes attend Pilates sessions once a fortnight.  
How does the program work?
  • All SWAS athletes are encouraged and supported to trial for WA U/15, U/16 & U/18 State hockey teams.
  • SWAS service providers are made available to assist all SWAS athletes as required, either individually or as a group depending on athlete needs.
  • Fitness testing and conditioning programs are provided by SWAS Exercise Physiologist.
