Amy Fortescue has a scholarship from the South West Academy of Sport in recognition of her talent in taekwondo. The Gelorup teenager however would not be out of place training with athletes in the academy’s soccer program.
The 16-year-old is making an impression in both sports, with national titles in taekwondo and selection to the State Under 17s soccer development squad among her recent highlights.
Fortescue found out this week that she has a spot in the State Under 17s soccer team. This means training in Perth twice a week as part of her weekly timetable.
“I attended a camp in the school holidays with the squad and am thrilled to have made the team,” she said.
High performance training in two sports has resulted in a busy schedule for the Newton Moore High School student – but Fortescue wouldn’t have it any other way.
“I train a lot but I enjoy sport – it’s good fun,’ she said.
A member of the South West Taekwondo Academy and the Country Coastal Junior Soccer Association, Fortescue’s passion for sport has led to many successes over the years.
Her triumphs include winning gold in the Under 18s and open divisions at the 2008 National Taekwondo Championships in Sydney and earning silver at the 2007 International Taekwondo Clubs Championships. Fortescue has medalled national taekwondo titles since she was 10 years old and is now a 2nd Dan Black belt.
