Endurance was an attribute Rowan Brown displayed in abundance when he competed against some of Australia’s best cross-country mountain bike riders at Shepparton last month.
The talented 16-year-old pushed through his races at round two of the 2010 Jayco Australian Mountain Bike National Series to win silver and bronze medals in his first national under-19s races.
Despite a challenging long course that saw many competitors drop out, the Dunsborough athlete showed his staying power by pressing through to finish in third position.
“Mentally it was a tough − about a quarter of the people pulled out because it was so hard,” Brown said.
“But I was in a good position so I kept going.”
The Dunsborough-based athlete was well-rewarded for his efforts during the second leg of the series, also earning second place in a short course race.
The South West Academy of Sport scholarship holder’s attention is now focused on the upcoming Karri Cup MTB Challenge, one of Western Australia's largest and longest running mountain bike events.
