The Kookaburras recently took time out from preparations for the upcoming Hero Honda FIH World Cup to help shape some of the South West’s most promising young hockey players.
During a visit to Bunbury last week, the national men’s hockey team put South West Academy of Sport talents through their paces at a special clinic at Bunbury Hockey Stadium.
SWAS chief executive officer Bernice Butlion said the academy’s hockey players welcomed the opportunity to learn from athletes at the top of their game.
“It is always an honour to be coached by the Kookaburras. They are world-class athletes who make an effort to share their knowledge,” she said.
“At Friday’s training session, the SWAS athletes were divided into various groups according to their positional play and the Kookaburras spent time teaching them specific new skills.
“The athletes – who travelled from the Bunbury, Busselton, Collie and Boyup Brook areas to be part of the clinic – appreciated the opportunity to learn from top Australian athletes and we hope to continue this positive relationship in the future.”
